Rendezvous: Leading With Love

Every two years, our Recovery Café Network convenes a gathering called Rendezvous, where people from  Recovery Cafés across the U.S. come together to share their work and support one another. On June 3 and 4 we hosted the first in person meeting since 2019, Rendezvous: Leading With Love. It began with a moving talk by our Cofounder, Killian Noe, reflecting on living from a place of love rather than fear. We heard from Café leaders about responsible stewardship of our Cafés, and building coalitions to advance recovery advocacy. Our keynote speaker, artist Rosi Greenberg, helped us all reflect on the polarity, rather than binary, of leading with both care/understanding and firmness/boundaries.

We also celebrated the growth—from 15 Cafés in 2019 to over 65 today—and impact of the Recovery Café Network.

Reclaiming Lives-Recovery Cafe Medford (OR) was recognized as the recipient of the inaugural Ricky Klausmeyer-Garcia Radical Hospitality and Inclusivity Award. Four members of Ricky’s family spoke; we honored Ricky’s contributions to the Network and Recovery Café Medford’s work, particularly related to their growing relationships with the Spanish-speaking community. We also spent time in smaller groups brainstorming about reaching out to rural, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, Spanish-speaking, and faith communities.

At the conclusion of this year’s Rendezvous, Killian addressed the attendees and, by extension, all those working and supporting Cafés across North America. She concluded with: “We are in awe of all of you.”

We are grateful to all who made the journey to Seattle to share this educational and inspirational time with us!

Thank you to Mike Schut from the Recovery Café Network for this overview.
